This fungus survives the winter primarily in infected plant debris, specifically in fallen leaves that remain on the ground. Within these leaves, the fungus forms fruiting bodies known as perithecia.

During the spring, as temperatures rise and rainfall increases, these fruiting bodies release spores into the air. These spores are then dispersed by wind or splashing water onto the developing foliage of the host tree.

Once the spores land on a leaf, they germinate and penetrate the leaf tissue, establishing a parasitic relationship where the fungus extracts nutrients from the plant host.

The life cycle of the pathogen allows for multiple cycles of infection during a single growing season, leading to progressive damage as the summer months continue.

The primary symptom of infection is the development of irregular, brown-to-black spots on the leaflets. These spots often start small and expand as the fungus consumes more leaf tissue.
