Botanically, these plants are distinguished by their erect, leafy stems that exhibit radial symmetry. Unlike standard agricultural plants, they lack a complex vascular system and well-developed roots, relying instead on simple rhizoids for minimal anchorage. Their lack of cuticular layers makes them highly susceptible to desiccation.

Regarding agrotechnical requirements, there is no cultivation protocol for this family. They cannot tolerate the soil manipulation, fertilization, or pesticide applications common in modern agriculture. Any attempt to cultivate them outside of highly controlled laboratory chambers usually leads to the death of the specimen due to their specific ecological requirements.

These plants are highly sensitive to environmental degradation, including deforestation and changes in water tables.
