The natural distribution of this genus spans tropical and subtropical regions across Asia, the Americas, and Oceania. They typically thrive in moist, mountainous habitats, often colonizing open slopes and areas with nutrient-poor, acidic soils. This adaptability makes them successful pioneers in disturbed forest ecosystems.

Successful cultivation requires high humidity levels and a substrate that mimics their natural acidic forest floor environment (pH 4.5–5.5). The growing medium must be highly porous to ensure rapid drainage, as Diplopterygium is extremely sensitive to waterlogged roots, which often leads to rapid decay.

Temperature management is crucial, with an ideal range between 18°C and 25°C. The plants do not tolerate sudden shifts in temperature or cold drafts, which cause immediate stress and necrosis of the frond tips. Professional greenhouse setups often employ ultrasonic humidifiers to maintain the constant ambient moisture required for survival.

The primary use of Diplopterygium is within ornamental horticulture and specialized botanical collections. Due to their complex morphology and difficulty in propagation, they are not cultivated for large-scale agricultural output. Their aesthetic value in tropical garden designs remains their main economic and cultural contribution.

The most common biological threats include fungal pathogens such as Pythium and Phytophthora, which proliferate in poorly ventilated, overly wet soil conditions. These pathogens cause systemic root rot, often resulting in total plant death if not addressed immediately through fungicide application and substrate replacement.

In terms of pests, scale insects and whiteflies are the primary nuisances. They tend to cluster on the underside of the fronds and along the rachis. A persistent infestation can lead to stunted growth and the development of sooty mold, which severely detracts from the plant's ornamental quality and overall health.
