Fontinalis, commonly known as fountain moss or water moss, belongs to the family Fontinalaceae. It is a perennial aquatic plant that naturally thrives in running water, attaching itself to stones, submerged wood, or tree roots. Its distribution range encompasses various regions across the Northern Hemisphere with temperate climates.

The plant exhibits unique botanical characteristics, lacking true roots and instead anchoring to substrates through specialized structures called rhizoids. Its delicate stems are densely covered with small, three-ranked lanceolate leaves, which create a lush, tufted appearance. Depending on light intensity and water nutrients, its color ranges from light green to deep olive.
This species is highly demanding regarding water quality, requiring cool, clear, and well-oxygenated water to thrive. The ideal temperature range for active growth is between 15 and 22 degrees Celsius; temperatures exceeding 25 degrees Celsius typically cause the moss to degrade, lose its vibrant color, and eventually perish.
Success in cultivation depends on simulating its natural habitat by providing sufficient water circulation or strong filtration. In stagnant environments, the moss quickly accumulates organic debris and algae, which prevents photosynthesis and hinders health, making regular water changes and current maintenance essential for survival.
Fontinalis is widely utilized for its aesthetic value in aquascaping and landscape ponds. Beyond its decorative function, it plays a vital ecological role by providing natural cover and shelter for fry and small aquatic invertebrates, while also assisting in water purification by absorbing excess nitrogenous compounds.
The primary threats to Fontinalis are invasive filamentous and blue-green algae, which can rapidly overgrow and suffocate the moss. Excessive light exposure combined with high nutrient levels in the water column creates an imbalance that allows these algae to outcompete the moss for essential resources and space.
