Paphiopedilum adductum is a unique member of the Orchidaceae family, endemic to the island of Mindanao in the Philippines. As a lithophytic species, it naturally clings to limestone cliffs, a characteristic that dictates its specific requirements in cultivation.
This orchid thrives in warm, humid conditions consistent with the tropical climate of its native range. Growers must maintain consistent temperatures, typically between 20°C and 26°C, avoiding significant fluctuations that can stress the plant and inhibit growth.
The substrate composition is crucial for the health of the plant. A well-draining medium consisting of medium-grade pine bark, perlite, charcoal, and limestone chips is essential to ensure proper air circulation to the roots while maintaining a slightly alkaline pH.
High humidity, ideally around 70–80%, is necessary for the plant to thrive. Consistent air movement is equally important; stagnant air can lead to moisture buildup in leaf axils, which is a major risk factor for developing various bacterial and fungal infections.
Watering should be performed carefully, using soft, filtered, or rainwater. The substrate should be kept consistently moist but never waterlogged. Ensuring that the plant does not sit in standing water is vital for root health and overall longevity.
Main diseases and pests
The most common threats to Paphiopedilum adductum include crown and root rot, which are often consequences of improper drainage or poor air circulation. These conditions can rapidly compromise the health of the plant's delicate tissues.
