In cultivation, this plant requires a highly porous and mineral-heavy substrate. A mixture consisting primarily of coarse sand, volcanic rock, and crushed gravel is essential to ensure rapid drainage and prevent root rot, which is the most common cause of failure in this species.

Climate requirements include intense sunlight and significant diurnal temperature shifts. Providing high levels of UV exposure is necessary to maintain the plant's characteristic compact, rigid structure and to prevent etiolation or abnormal growth patterns.

During the growing season, watering should be careful and infrequent, allowing the substrate to dry out completely between waterings. Excessive moisture, especially during humid or cloudy weather, must be strictly avoided to preserve the integrity of the root system.
