White mustard

Description

Sowing dates

White mustard is a cold-hardy crop that allows for early spring sowing, typically starting when soil temperatures reach 3-5 degrees Celsius.

For grain production, timely sowing is crucial to ensure the plants capitalize on early spring moisture before the drier months arrive.

Seeding rates vary significantly based on the intended use, with 10-15 kg/ha required for seed production and 20-25 kg/ha for cover crop applications.

Seed depth should be maintained at 2-3 cm for heavier soils and 3-4 cm for lighter soils to promote uniform germination and emergence.

Due to its rapid development cycle, white mustard is an excellent choice for catch cropping in rotation systems to suppress weeds and improve soil structure.

Growing requirements

Belonging to the Brassicaceae family, white mustard thrives in a variety of soil types but performs best in well-drained, fertile loams and chernozems.

The plant is moisture-sensitive, requiring consistent rainfall during the establishment phase and the early stages of vegetative development.

White mustard demonstrates remarkable cold tolerance, capable of surviving light frosts as low as -5 degrees Celsius, making it suitable for temperate climates.

Adequate sunlight is necessary for optimal photosynthesis and the production of seeds, so planting density must be managed carefully to avoid competition.

Soil nutrient levels, particularly nitrogen, play a key role in biomass production, which is essential when the mustard is grown as a green manure.

Yield

Commercial yields of white mustard seed typically range between 1.5 and 2 tonnes per hectare under favorable management and environmental conditions.

When used as a green manure, the crop can produce substantial biomass, reaching 200-300 decitonnes per hectare within just two months of growth.

Yield stability is heavily influenced by the prevention of pest outbreaks during the flowering stage, which is the most vulnerable period for seed set.

The application of boron and other micro-nutrients has been shown to improve seed quality and total oil content, increasing the market value of the harvest.

Environmental factors like excessive heat during flowering can negatively impact seed set, leading to lower yields and reduced quality for oil extraction.

Main diseases and pests

Crucifer flea beetles are the most significant threat to white mustard, particularly in the seedling stage, where they can devastate a stand in a few days.

Other major pests include the rape blossom beetle, cabbage seedpod weevil, diamondback moth, and various species of aphids that feed on plant fluids.

Disease pressure from white rust, downy mildew, and sclerotinia stem rot often increases when crops are grown without sufficient intervals in the rotation.

The crop may also be targeted by the common beet weevil, cereal leaf beetle, and the sunn pest, though these are secondary threats compared to crucifer-specific insects.

  • Crop rotation with a 3-4 year interval.
  • Use of certified, disease-free seed.
  • Scouting and timely application of insecticides.
  • Control of related cruciferous weeds.
  • Proper seedbed preparation to promote rapid germination.

Harvesting

Harvesting white mustard requires precise timing because the pods are susceptible to shattering if left standing too long after maturity.

Direct combining at 12-14% seed moisture is the standard industry practice to minimize loss and ensure the stability of the harvested grain.

In cases of uneven maturity, swathing (windrowing) may be used to allow the crop to dry down naturally before final threshing with a combine.

Post-harvest conditioning is essential; the grain must be cleaned and dried immediately to prevent spoilage and the development of off-flavors.

Proper storage in ventilated bins is necessary to preserve the volatile essential oils that give white mustard its characteristic flavor and quality.
