Description

Growing requirements

Dimorphorchis beccarii is a distinct species belonging to the Orchidaceae family. This large-sized epiphytic orchid originates from the tropical rainforests of Borneo, where it thrives in humid, shaded environments.

Successful cultivation requires strict adherence to tropical climate parameters. The plants should be kept in a temperature range of 25°C to 30°C throughout the year, avoiding any significant fluctuations.

High relative humidity is essential for the healthy growth of this species. Maintaining a humidity level of 80% or higher is recommended, combined with excellent airflow to prevent physiological stress.

The potting medium must be extremely coarse, mimicking the natural bark surfaces of rainforest trees. A mix of large fir bark, charcoal, and perlite is ideal for ensuring sufficient aeration for the sensitive root system.

Lighting should be bright but filtered. Dimorphorchis beccarii is sensitive to direct midday sun, which can easily scorch its leaves. Providing diffused light ensures steady vegetative development and potential blooming.

Main diseases and pests

The primary threats include fungal infections and root rot, which are often caused by poor drainage or stagnant water trapped in the leaf axils. Proactive monitoring of the plant's hydration status is critical.

Common pests like scale insects and mealybugs may colonize the stems and leaves. Early detection and the application of mild, oil-based horticultural treatments are the most effective control measures.
