Brugmansia versicolor

Angel's Trumpet

Description

Growing requirements

Brugmansia versicolor is a magnificent woody shrub belonging to the Solanaceae family, originating from the tropical regions of Ecuador. It is widely cultivated for its distinct pendulous flowers that can reach significant lengths, often changing color as they mature.

This species requires high light intensity to thrive and bloom effectively. While it prefers full sun, in extremely hot climates, partial afternoon shade is essential to prevent leaf scorch and ensure the plant maintains its vigor throughout the peak summer months.

Regarding soil requirements, Brugmansia demands a well-drained, nutrient-rich medium. A high-quality loam-based compost mixed with organic matter such as peat or well-rotted compost provides the best structure for healthy root development and efficient nutrient uptake.

Agrotechnical management involves aggressive fertilization during the growing season. Because the plant produces such a large biomass, it requires balanced NPK fertilizers with added micronutrients applied weekly to sustain continuous flowering and foliage growth.

Since the plant is not frost-hardy, in temperate climates, it must be grown in containers. Proper winterization in a frost-free area with minimal watering allows the plant to go dormant, protecting it from thermal stress until the following spring.

Main diseases and pests

Pest management is a critical aspect of Brugmansia maintenance. Common threats include spider mites, whiteflies, and aphids, which are attracted to the succulent new growth. Routine inspections of the leaf undersides are necessary to detect and mitigate infestations early.

Pathogenic threats usually involve root rots caused by Phytophthora or Pythium species, particularly when the soil is waterlogged. To avoid these, growers should ensure pots have excellent drainage and avoid letting the base of the plant sit in stagnant water.
