Mecoprop-P belongs to the chemical class of phenoxycarboxylic acids. It acts as a selective, systemic herbicide that functions as a synthetic auxin.
The mechanism of action involves the disruption of the plant's hormonal balance. Upon absorption through the leaves, the substance is translocated to the meristematic tissues.
It causes uncontrolled growth and cell division, leading to the distortion of stems and leaves, metabolic failure, and the eventual death of the target weed species.
As an optically active R-(+)-isomer, Mecoprop-P provides significantly higher herbicidal efficacy compared to the racemic mixture, allowing for reduced application rates.
The compound is characterized by rapid systemic uptake, which minimizes the risk of wash-off by rain shortly after application.
What it targets
Mecoprop-P is primarily used to control a wide range of broadleaf weeds in cereal crops and established grasslands.
The substance is particularly effective against several common problematic weed species, including:

- Stellaria media (Chickweed)
It is widely recognized for its superior control of Galium aparine, often being the preferred choice when other hormonal herbicides fail to provide complete control.
The compound is frequently combined with other active ingredients to address a broader spectrum of weeds, especially in complex agricultural environments.
Rates and timing
The product is typically applied to winter and spring cereal crops, such as wheat, barley, rye, and oats, as well as amenity turf and pastures.
The optimal application timing is during the active growth phase of the weeds, generally between the 2-leaf and tillering stages of the crop.
Recommended dosage rates vary based on the weed species density and the specific formulation, generally ranging from 0.5 to 1.5 kg active ingredient per hectare.
Care must be taken when formulating tank mixes to ensure compatibility, preventing potential crop injury and optimizing the synergistic effect between components.
Application should ideally occur under favourable environmental conditions, with temperatures ranging from +10°C to +25°C to facilitate systemic movement.
Restrictions
Mecoprop-P is an effective herbicide that must be handled with care to prevent unintended damage to sensitive non-target species.
Drift management is critical; the spray must not contact sensitive crops such as legumes, vegetables, orchards, or vineyards, as even trace amounts can cause significant phytotoxicity.
Avoid application during windy conditions or when night frosts are predicted, as these factors can lead to drift issues or reduced herbicidal efficacy.
Operators must wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) during handling and application to prevent skin, eye, and respiratory irritation.
Strict storage protocols must be followed to ensure the product is kept in a secure, climate-controlled environment away from food, feed, and water sources.
