Mode of action

Flucarbazone-sodium belongs to the sulfonylaminocarbonyltriazolinone chemical class. It is a selective systemic herbicide that provides both foliar and soil activity.

The primary mechanism of action involves the inhibition of the acetolactate synthase (ALS) enzyme in target weed species. By blocking this enzyme, the plant ceases the synthesis of essential branched-chain amino acids, specifically valine, leucine, and isoleucine.

Following absorption, the growth of weeds stops almost immediately. Initial visible symptoms include chlorosis and necrosis at the growing points, which eventually lead to the total collapse of the weed within a few weeks.

Due to its systemic nature, the active substance is rapidly translocated through the plant's phloem and xylem, effectively reaching meristematic tissues. This allows for both the control of existing weeds and residual protection against later-germinating individuals.

Selectivity for cereal crops, such as wheat, is achieved through the plant's ability to rapidly metabolize flucarbazone-sodium into non-toxic compounds, ensuring the crop remains unharmed.

What it targets

The compound is primarily used to control a broad spectrum of grass weeds that pose a significant competitive threat to cereal crop development.

It is particularly effective against stubborn species such as wild oat and various types of foxtail and barnyard grass.

Depending on the specific registration, it may also exhibit suppression of certain broadleaf weeds, though its main agricultural value lies in its grass control properties.
