Calcium phosphide

Description

Mode of action

Calcium phosphide is an inorganic compound that reacts with moisture in the air or soil to produce phosphine gas through a hydrolysis reaction. This gas is a highly effective fumigant used in various agricultural applications.

Phosphine acts as a potent inhibitor of cellular respiration. It targets the cytochrome oxidase enzyme system in pests and rodents, blocking the aerobic respiration process and leading to rapid death.

The efficacy of the compound relies heavily on the gas-tightness of the treated area. Since phosphine has high penetrating power, it can diffuse effectively through dense grain stacks and deep rodent burrows.

The rate of gas release depends on the environmental conditions, particularly humidity and temperature. This allows for a controlled release of the toxic agent during the required exposure period.

Because the release is not instantaneous, operators have sufficient time to apply the material and secure the treatment area before concentrations reach lethal levels for humans.

What it targets

The primary use of calcium phosphide is for the control of rodents, such as voles, rats, and gophers, in agricultural fields, pastures, and surrounding farm structures.

It is also widely utilized for the fumigation of grain stores and seed warehouses to eradicate stored-product pests, including weevils, beetles, and mites that compromise food security.

The compound is essential for situations where conventional baiting or mechanical trapping methods are insufficient to control high populations of agricultural pests.

By eliminating burrowing rodents, calcium phosphide helps protect the integrity of root systems in crops and prevents damage to the soil structure of fields.

The fumigant is effective against all life stages of target pests, including eggs and larvae, which are often protected within their habitat, making it a critical tool for stored product protection.

Rates and timing

Application rates are determined by the specific target pest, the volume of the space, and the environmental conditions. In field rodent control, the product is typically placed inside the burrows, which are then sealed.

When fumigating stored grains, the dosage depends on the volume of the storage facility and the ambient temperature, which affects the rate of phosphine gas evolution.

Exposure periods are crucial and generally range from 3 to 7 days, depending on the severity of the infestation and the specific pest being targeted.

Environmental temperatures below +10°C can significantly inhibit the chemical reaction, often requiring longer exposure times or adjustments to the application strategy.

Professional calibration and monitoring of the application are necessary to ensure that the required concentration is maintained consistently across the entire treatment area.

Restrictions

Due to the high acute toxicity of phosphine gas, the use of calcium phosphide in or near residential buildings, schools, or animal housing is strictly prohibited.

Fumigation must be performed by certified professionals under controlled conditions, ensuring the area is fully secured, cordoned off, and clearly marked with danger signs.

Personnel must use approved respiratory protection and specialized equipment, including gas detectors, to verify that phosphine concentrations have reached safe levels before re-entry.

Residues generated by the chemical reaction must be disposed of in accordance with environmental regulations for hazardous waste to prevent soil and water contamination.

Compliance with strict safety regulations, including worker training and medical surveillance, is mandatory for the legal and safe application of this fumigant.
