The crawler stage typically occurs in mid-summer. This is the period of greatest dispersal, as the tiny, mobile nymphs travel across the branches to establish new feeding sites.
By late summer and early autumn, the nymphs settle, begin to feed, and transition into the second-instar stage, where they will remain stationary throughout the winter months.
A primary indicator is the production of honeydew, a sticky substance excreted by the scales. This honeydew often accumulates on the foliage below, serving as a medium for sooty mold growth.
Sooty mold manifests as a black, powdery coating on the needles, which hinders photosynthesis and detracts significantly from the tree's appearance.
Visible colonies of female scales on the twigs are a clear sign of infestation. These clusters may look like small, brownish bumps or swellings along the bark of the current and previous year's growth.
Yellowing, chlorotic needles, and sparse foliage are symptoms of long-term feeding. The tree may appear thin or "sickly" compared to healthy neighbors in the same stand.
Finally, the presence of ants, wasps, or bees gathering on the branches is often a secondary sign, as these insects are attracted to the sugary honeydew produced by the scales.
Management strategy relies on early detection and targeted intervention. Monitoring for the crawler stage in mid-summer is the most effective window for applying control measures.
Systemic insecticides are the preferred choice, as they are absorbed by the tree and consumed by the scales while they feed on the sap, providing long-lasting protection.
Horticultural oils or insecticidal soaps can be used during the crawler stage to smother the young nymphs before they develop their protective cuticle, provided that weather conditions allow.
Sanitation is essential; pruning and destroying heavily infested branches can help lower the population density and prevent further spread throughout the tree or plantation.
