Mytilicolidae is a family of parasitic copepods that act as obligate parasites of various marine bivalve mollusks. Taxonomically, they belong to the order Cyclopoida. While they do not affect terrestrial agriculture, they represent a significant economic threat to the aquaculture industry by infecting commercially valuable shellfish populations globally.
The primary hosts of these parasites are mussels (Mytilus edulis, Mytilus galloprovincialis), oysters, and various other bivalve species. The infestation is most prevalent in coastal areas where intensive farming of these mollusks occurs on ropes, collectors, or submerged trays.
The biology of Mytilicolidae involves a complex life cycle with several larval stages. Adult females settle within the host's digestive tract, adhering to the intestinal walls. By feeding on the host's intestinal contents and epithelial tissues, the parasite severely stunts the growth and reduces the fecundity of the host mollusk.
The resulting damage manifests as physical exhaustion of the mollusk, reduced meat quality, and lower market value. In instances of high infection density, significant mortality rates occur, particularly among juvenile populations. High-density farming practices facilitate the rapid horizontal transmission of the parasite within the population.

Key management strategies include optimizing stocking densities, implementing mandatory fallowing periods between farming cycles, and conducting routine diagnostic monitoring of the intestinal tracts of mollusks to detect infestations at early stages.
