The family Hyalellidae belongs to the order Amphipoda. These small crustaceans are primarily aquatic but can become significant pests in agricultural environments, especially within controlled environments like hydroponic, aquaponic, and greenhouse systems that utilize recirculating water.
These organisms primarily target young seedlings and the delicate root systems of vegetable crops. When populations surge, they feed on the root hairs and soft tissue of plants growing in water or moist substrates, which can severely compromise the plant's ability to absorb water and essential nutrients.
Regarding their biology, Hyalellidae undergo direct development, meaning there is no free-swimming larval stage. Females carry their eggs in a brood pouch until the juveniles emerge, fully formed. This reproductive strategy allows for rapid population expansion within a system, often unnoticed until damage becomes visible.
The impact of a Hyalellidae infestation is manifested through stunted growth, wilting, and, in severe cases, the total death of the crop. Root tissue damage creates entry points for secondary bacterial and fungal pathogens, which often causes even more extensive damage than the feeding of the crustaceans themselves.
