These mites are extremely difficult to see without high magnification. They undergo a complex life cycle, featuring different forms adapted for either active feeding or winter survival in protected areas.

Adult mated females spend the winter under the bark scales of vines or within the dormant buds. As soon as the sap begins to flow and buds start to swell in spring, they migrate to the emerging foliage.

The reproduction rate is highly dependent on environmental conditions. Under favorable warm and humid weather, the pest can complete its cycle rapidly, leading to several generations per season.

Knowledge of their hiding spots during winter is crucial for timing effective early-season control treatments before the population begins to expand across the leaves.

This mite specifically attacks grapevines, feeding on the cellular sap of young leaves, developing flower clusters, and the terminal points of new shoots.

Feeding activity disrupts normal plant development. When infestation is severe, flower clusters may fail to develop, leading to significant yield loss and irregular cluster formation.

The physiological impact includes reduced photosynthesis, as damaged leaves cannot produce enough energy. This weakens the entire vine, affecting its overall health and resilience.

Deformed shoots and stunted internode growth are typical signs of heavy feeding. Such damage limits the vine's ability to store energy, negatively impacting winter hardiness.

In mature vineyards, cumulative damage over several years can result in a significant decline in vine vigor and fruit quality, eventually requiring intensive treatment programs.

Initial signs of infestation appear on the young leaves as tiny, pale, or yellowish spots. As feeding progresses, these spots may merge, and the leaf tissue becomes distorted or puckered.

Deformed, asymmetrical leaves are a classic symptom. In certain grape varieties, the damaged areas may show a reddish tint, which is often mistaken for nutrient deficiencies or viral issues.

A dusty or felt-like coating might be visible on the undersides of the leaves under magnification. Eventually, heavily infested leaves may become brittle and drop prematurely.

Flower clusters affected by the mite often show poor fruit set, leading to sparse or "straggly" bunches with small, underdeveloped berries, which significantly ruins the crop's market value.

Terminal growth may cease, resulting in a stunted appearance with many small, distorted leaves crowded together at the tip of the shoot, mimicking symptoms of severe viral infection.

Effective management relies on early spring applications of acaricides, timed exactly when the mites emerge from their overwintering sites but before they have established deep inside the buds.

Sulphur-based products are traditional and effective control agents, but systemic acaricides are often preferred during the growing season to ensure total coverage of dense foliage.

Cultural practices are essential. Removing and burning infested prunings and cleaning the old bark from trunks can significantly reduce the number of overwintering females.

Proper canopy management, including timely shoot thinning and hedging, ensures better air circulation, reducing the high humidity levels that these mites thrive in.

Strict quarantine measures when introducing new vines into a vineyard are recommended to prevent the accidental introduction of this pest, as it is easily spread by nursery stock.
