Longidoridae, commonly known as needle nematodes, are a family of migratory ectoparasitic nematodes within the order Dorylaimida. These microscopic organisms possess a characteristic long, hollow stylet that allows them to feed on the root tips of plants, causing stunted growth and poor nutrient uptake in affected specimens.

These pests have a wide host range, attacking various horticultural crops including grapevines, strawberries, raspberries, and tree fruits. They are also problematic in various ornamental plants and field crops. Their ability to survive in the soil for extended periods makes them particularly difficult to manage in perennial cropping systems.
The life cycle of Longidoridae is relatively slow compared to other nematode species. It progresses through an egg stage and four subsequent juvenile stages, each requiring a molt. Both juveniles and adults live in the soil environment, navigating through soil pores to locate roots and often moving deeper into the soil profile to avoid unfavorable environmental conditions.
The damage caused by Longidoridae is twofold. Firstly, direct feeding causes root tip swelling, browning, and necrosis. Secondly, and more critically, several genera within this family (such as Xiphinema and Longidorus) are efficient vectors of nepoviruses. These viruses cause severe mosaic patterns, ring spots, and overall plant decline, which significantly impacts economic productivity.
Integrated pest management strategies are essential for control. This includes:
- Testing soil for nematode populations prior to planting perennial crops.
- Using certified virus-free plant materials.
- Implementing rotation with non-host crops to reduce soil population levels.
- Applying soil fumigation or chemical nematicides where permitted by regulations.
Modern research is increasingly focused on finding resistant plant cultivars and biological control agents to mitigate the reliance on harsh chemicals. Maintaining soil health and balanced organic matter can also help suppress nematode activity, making preventive management the most effective approach for long-term agricultural success.
