Adults are tiny, oval-shaped, and usually translucent or creamy-white in color, making them extremely difficult to detect with the naked eye.

Their biological development cycle includes egg, larva, protonymph, deutonymph (hypopus), and adult stages, with the hypopus stage being highly resistant to environmental stressors.

These mites thrive in environments with high humidity and moderate temperatures, which are common in poorly ventilated silos or humid greenhouse conditions.

Accurate identification requires laboratory analysis or high-magnification microscopy, as they share morphological characteristics with other species of storage mites.

What it damages

The primary hosts for Michaelopus are stored grains, pulses, and oilseeds, where they feed on the embryos and organic debris, causing significant loss of germination quality.

In addition to stored crops, these mites can damage greenhouse plants by feeding on roots and stems, particularly in high-moisture potting media.
