These insects primarily affect mushroom crops, both wild and cultivated. While they are a natural part of forest ecosystems, their presence in commercial mushroom production facilities can lead to significant outbreaks. The larvae thrive by feeding on the basidiocarps, which are the visible fruiting bodies of fungi, causing internal structural damage to the crop.

The life cycle of Platypezidae involves complete metamorphosis. Female flies lay their eggs on the surface of developing fungi. Upon hatching, the larvae burrow into the tissue of the mushroom, creating tunnels as they feed. This larval stage is the most destructive phase of their life cycle, leading to the rapid degradation of the fungal structure before they eventually pupate in the surrounding soil or substrate.

The damage caused by flat-footed flies is often hidden until the internal integrity of the mushroom is compromised. The tunneling activity not only physically destroys the mushroom but also creates entry points for secondary infections, such as bacterial blotch or mold, which renders the mushrooms unmarketable. A high infestation rate can lead to the total loss of a harvest if not managed properly.

To protect mushroom crops from Platypezidae, integrated pest management (IPM) strategies should be implemented:

  • Ensure airtight sealing of cultivation rooms with fine-mesh screens on ventilation systems.
  • Practice rigorous sterilization and pasteurization of the growing substrate to eliminate larvae and pupae.
  • Monitor for adult fly presence using sticky yellow traps to detect populations early.
  • Maintain optimal environmental conditions and practice prompt harvesting to minimize the duration that mature mushrooms remain exposed to egg-laying flies.
