Yamatocallis is a genus of aphids belonging to the family Aphididae, within the order Hemiptera. These insects are highly specialized herbivores that feed exclusively on the sap of various maple tree species (genus Acer). They are recognized as significant pests in ornamental landscaping and urban arboriculture, often causing aesthetic and physiological damage to maple trees in temperate climates.

The primary host plants for Yamatocallis include various maple species, with a particular preference for Japanese maples and common maple varieties. These aphids colonize the underside of leaves, where they insert their stylets into the plant vascular tissue to extract nutrients. Heavy infestation can lead to leaf yellowing, deformation, and premature leaf drop, which significantly weakens the overall health of the tree.

The life cycle of Yamatocallis typically involves overwintering as eggs attached to the bark of young twigs. As spring temperatures rise, these eggs hatch into stem mothers, which start producing subsequent generations. Throughout the summer, the population cycles through several generations, including both wingless forms that stay on the host and winged forms that facilitate the spread of the colony to nearby trees.

The damage caused by Yamatocallis is characterized by the secretion of honeydew, a sticky substance left on the foliage. This honeydew serves as a substrate for sooty mold, a fungus that grows in black patches on the leaves, blocking sunlight and reducing the tree's photosynthetic capacity. Beyond the visual blight, the exhaustion of plant resources by large colonies can stunt growth and leave the tree vulnerable to secondary stress factors.
