Tylenchorhynchus teeni is a microscopic plant-parasitic nematode belonging to the order Tylenchida and the family Telotylenchidae. It is a soil-borne ectoparasite that primarily inhabits the root zone of plants.

These nematodes possess a vermiform (worm-like) body, which is adapted for movement within the thin films of water surrounding soil particles. They are invisible to the naked eye.

A key feature of its biology is the presence of a distinct stylet, a hollow, needle-like structure used to puncture root cells. Through this stylet, the nematode feeds on the cytoplasm of root cells without entering the root tissue entirely.

The life cycle involves eggs, four larval stages, and adults. The entire development process occurs in the soil, where the nematodes find moisture and plant hosts necessary for their survival.

These nematodes exhibit high resilience and can survive various soil conditions, often remaining in a state of reduced metabolic activity when environmental conditions become unfavorable.

What it damages

This pest attacks a wide range of agricultural crops, including various cereals, vegetables, forage grasses, and turf, making it a significant challenge for diverse farming systems.

Damage is most severe during the active growth phase, as the feeding activity stunts root development, effectively reducing the plant's ability to absorb essential water and nutrients.

Management of Tylenchorhynchus teeni requires an integrated pest management (IPM) approach to maintain nematode populations below the economic threshold.
