How to identify
Trama mordvilkoi is a specialized aphid species that leads an exclusively subterranean lifestyle. Adult individuals have an oval, convex body shape, colored in whitish, grayish, or pale yellow tones, often covered with a waxy coating.
Systematically, this species belongs to the order Hemiptera, family Aphididae. These insects have poorly developed limbs, which are adapted for slow movement among soil particles near plant roots.
A characteristic biological feature of this species is its close association with ants, which provide the aphids with protection, transport to new root systems, and specific living conditions within their tunnels.
Unlike aerial aphid species, Trama mordvilkoi has almost no functional wings, as its entire life cycle takes place in the root zone. Adult size usually does not exceed 2–3 millimeters.
Identification in field conditions is difficult due to their hidden lifestyle; therefore, accurate diagnosis often requires extracting the root ball and using microscopic examination.
What it damages
This pest primarily affects herbaceous perennials, including valuable agricultural and ornamental crops. The greatest damage is recorded on plants from the Asteraceae family and some legumes.
The aphid sucks cell sap from young rootlets, leading to impaired plant nutrition. Micro-injuries form at the puncture sites, through which secondary infections and soil-borne pathogens easily enter the plant tissues.
Severe infestation of the root system causes general stunting of the plant's aerial part. Plants become chlorotic, lose turgor, and gradually dry out, even with sufficient watering.
Massive reproduction of the pest leads to a decrease in yield and aesthetic value of plantings. In nurseries, the presence of aphids can cause the death of a large number of young seedlings.
Damage to the root collar and main roots makes the plant vulnerable to unfavorable abiotic factors, such as drought or sudden drops in soil temperature.
When it appears
The development cycle of the root aphid is inextricably linked to plant phenology and soil temperature. The pest's activity begins in early spring, as soon as the soil warms up to the minimum required temperatures.
Several generations of insects develop during the growing season. The maximum population density is usually observed in mid-summer when conditions for activity in the soil are most favorable.
In autumn, as soil temperatures drop, the aphids move deeper into the ground. The insects primarily overwinter in the egg or adult stage in soil cavities, often within ant nests.
The rate of reproduction directly depends on substrate moisture—excessively dry or waterlogged soil slows down colony development, while moderate humidity promotes growth.
Monitoring for the pest should be carried out during the period of active root growth when the probability of detecting insects on the root system is highest.
Signs of infestation
The first sign of infestation is sudden wilting during the hottest hours of the day, which does not improve after deep watering. This indicates serious damage to the root hairs.
Upon inspection of the underground part, a characteristic white or grayish mealy coating appears on the roots. This coating is the aphid's waxy secretion that protects it from moisture.
The presence of a large number of ants in the root zone is an indirect but important indicator of possible aphid colonization. Ants "herd" the colonies, protecting them from natural predators.
In severe cases, significant growth stunting and leaf discoloration occur. The plant's development practically stops due to the loss of its ability to absorb water and nutrients.
When uprooting a plant, small, slow-moving whitish insects are visible in the soil around the roots, which quickly try to burrow deeper when the soil structure is disturbed.
Control measures
The protection system includes agrotechnical methods aimed at creating unfavorable conditions for the aphids. Deep autumn plowing is important as it helps destroy overwintering sites and disrupts ant nests.
The use of systemic insecticides is the primary method of chemical control. The preparations are applied by soil drenching, allowing the active ingredient to reach the root system.
Controlling ants in the area is mandatory because, without them, the root aphid population significantly declines. The use of poisoned baits or specific insecticidal powders is recommended.
It is necessary to strictly follow crop rotation and avoid dense plantings, which facilitate the rapid spread of the pest from one plant to another through the soil.
