Takecallis taiwanus, commonly known as the bamboo aphid, is a member of the Aphididae family, order Hemiptera. It is a highly specialized pest that thrives specifically on various bamboo species globally.
The adult aphids are relatively small, characterized by a yellowish-green body color that provides effective camouflage against the green leaves of their host plants. Their size typically ranges from 1.5 to 2.5 millimeters.
Reproduction is primarily parthenogenetic, allowing for rapid colonization of bamboo groves. In warmer climates, these aphids can produce multiple generations annually without the need for mating.
Overwintering occurs primarily in the egg stage, which are deposited in sheltered locations such as leaf sheaths or nodes, ensuring that the population persists even through cold periods.
As an invasive species in many parts of the world, Takecallis taiwanus often lacks specific natural predators, enabling its population to reach damaging levels very quickly.
What it damages
