Description

How to identify

The mushroom bulb mite (Sancassania coprophila) belongs to the Acaridae family. These microscopic pests are characterized by a shiny, pale yellow, or white body reaching approximately 0.5–0.8 mm in length.

They possess four pairs of legs and a globular body shape. A unique feature of their life cycle is the presence of a hypopus stage, which aids in dispersal and survival under harsh conditions.

These mites thrive in environments with high moisture levels and decaying organic matter, making manure-rich soil an ideal breeding ground.

Their reproduction rate is extremely high, and populations can explode within a short period if temperature conditions are favorable (approx. +20...+25°C).

They are primarily subterranean, dwelling in the root zone or within bulbs where they remain protected from surface treatments.

What it damages

The mite affects a variety of greenhouse crops, including cucumbers and tomatoes, as well as bulbous ornamental plants like lilies and tulips.

They consume root tissues and penetrate the underground parts of stems, creating entry points for secondary diseases such as soft rot.

Damage is typically most severe in nurseries and greenhouses where organic amendments like raw manure provide excessive food sources.

Severe infestations can lead to complete root system destruction, causing stunted growth, wilting, and eventually the death of the plant.

In bulb storage, these mites cause deep pitting and decay, rendering the bulbs unsuitable for propagation or planting.

Signs of infestation

The first indicator of infestation is unprovoked wilting, often occurring despite adequate irrigation. Closer inspection reveals brown, decaying, or hollowed-out roots.

Frass (debris from the mite) is often visible near the root crown, appearing as fine, light-colored particles mixed with soil.

In bulb crops, infested areas become soft and discolored. Over time, the affected tissues collapse and release a characteristic unpleasant odor due to secondary bacterial rot.

Yellowing leaves on young seedlings often indicate root damage caused by these mites, especially when symptoms start from the lower foliage.

Using a hand lens, one can identify colonies of these mites clustered around the damaged areas, particularly where organic matter is decomposing.

Control measures

Effective management requires strict adherence to sanitation protocols, including the sterilization of growing media and the avoidance of raw organic matter.

Maintaining proper drainage and avoiding waterlogged soil conditions will significantly reduce the risk of population outbreaks.

Integrated pest management includes the use of selective acaricides applied as a soil drench to reach the mite population effectively.

Preventive measures include the inspection of incoming plant material and bulbs to ensure they are free from pests before introduction to the growing environment.

  • Use steam or thermal sterilization for soil.
  • Ensure good ventilation in greenhouses to manage humidity.
  • Remove and destroy all heavily infested plant debris immediately.
