European plaice

The European plaice (Pleuronectes platessa) is a member of the order Pleuronectiformes and the family Pleuronectidae. It is a flatfish known for its asymmetrical body, as both eyes are positioned on the right side of the head.

The fish has a smooth, oval-shaped body covered in small scales. One of its most distinctive features is a row of bony tubercles extending from behind the eyes to the start of the lateral line, accompanied by characteristic orange spots.

Adult specimens typically range from 25 to 50 cm in length, although some individuals can grow significantly larger. The eye-side color varies from brown to dark olive, providing excellent camouflage against sandy or muddy seabeds.

The blind side of the body is white, often with irregular dark patches. This countershading adaptation is typical for flatfish that spend most of their time lying on the sea floor.

The species is primarily found in the coastal waters of the Northeastern Atlantic, including the North Sea, Baltic Sea, and parts of the Mediterranean, where it thrives in relatively shallow waters.

It is important to clarify that Pleuronectes platessa is not a plant pest. It is a marine fish and poses absolutely no threat to agricultural crops, garden plants, or forestry resources.

The diet of the European plaice consists of marine invertebrates, including polychaete worms, bivalve mollusks, and small crustaceans. It lacks the biological mechanisms to feed on or damage terrestrial vegetation.

Any classification of this species as an agricultural pest is biologically incorrect and misleading. The fish completes its entire life cycle in the marine environment, with zero impact on plant physiology or crop health.

In the context of agriculture and botany, the European plaice is an irrelevant object. It is a species of high economic value within the fishing industry, serving as a food source rather than a threat to production.

Consequently, no pest control measures, chemical treatments, or biological protections are required regarding this species in any agricultural setting. It remains a purely marine-based aquatic creature.
