Metoponium is a genus of beetles belonging to the Tenebrionidae family (darkling beetles), order Coleoptera. These insects are primarily adapted to arid and semi-arid soil environments.

The adults are typically elongated, dark-colored beetles. They are known for their ability to thrive in dry conditions, often hiding under soil clumps or debris during the day.

The larvae, which are the main cause of agricultural damage, are cylindrical with hardened, chitinous cuticles. They are often referred to as false wireworms due to their resemblance to click beetle larvae.
