Mites (Acarida) are a group of minute arthropods belonging to the class Arachnida. In agricultural settings, the most economically significant families include Tetranychidae (spider mites), Eriophyidae (gall mites), and Tarsonemidae (thread-footed mites).

Due to their microscopic size, these pests are often difficult to detect during the initial stages of infestation. Their life cycle typically involves egg, larva, nymph, and adult stages, with development progressing rapidly in warm, dry environments.

Most species are capable of completing their life cycle in as little as one to two weeks, which allows for rapid population growth and sudden outbreaks in greenhouses and fields.

Mites overwinter in sheltered locations such as leaf litter, bark crevices, or soil. As temperatures rise, they emerge and migrate to host plants to feed on cell sap using specialized mouthparts.

They are known for their high adaptability and the ability to quickly develop resistance to chemical pesticides, making integrated pest management (IPM) essential for effective control.

What it damages

Mites are polyphagous pests that attack a wide range of horticultural and field crops, causing significant damage by piercing leaf cells and sucking out the chlorophyll-rich contents.

Signs of infestation

Spider mites are notorious for producing fine, silken webbing on the undersides of leaves or across shoots, which serves as a protective structure for the colony.

Symptoms of gall mite infection include distorted growth, raised bumps or pimples on leaves, and excessive hair growth (erineum) on the leaf surface, which alters the plant's morphology.

General wilting and loss of turgor despite adequate soil moisture are strong indicators of a severe mite infestation that has already compromised the plant's water balance.

Control measures

Cultural practices, including the removal of weeds and crop residues, are vital for reducing mite populations by eliminating overwintering sites near the production area.

Maintaining proper plant health through balanced fertilization and adequate irrigation can make plants more resilient to initial mite colonization and feeding pressure.

Chemical control should be implemented using acaricides, ensuring a rotation of chemical classes to prevent the development of pesticide resistance within the mite population.

Biological control, using predatory mites such as Phytoseiulus persimilis or predatory beetles, is a highly effective method in greenhouse environments for natural pest suppression.

Consistent monitoring and early detection allow growers to take targeted actions, such as spot treatments, to keep mite populations below the economic injury level.
