The elm gall aphid, scientifically known as Kaltenbachiella ulmifusus, is a small insect belonging to the family Pemphigidae. This pest is specifically adapted to inhabit and manipulate the tissues of elm trees.
These aphids are best identified by the distinct galls they induce on the leaves. These structures serve as protected chambers where the aphids feed and reproduce throughout the growing season.
The biological cycle involves a complex alternation between the primary host (elm) and other plants, which is a characteristic feature of this aphid species' evolutionary strategy.
Physically, the aphids themselves are small and often pale or yellowish, but they remain hidden inside the galls, making them difficult to spot without dissecting the affected plant tissue.
Proper identification usually requires field observation of the gall shape and location on the leaf, as well as microscopic examination of the aphids contained within the structure.
What it damages
The primary host for Kaltenbachiella ulmifusus is the elm tree (Ulmus spp.). Both ornamental trees in urban environments and wild stands can be heavily infested.
By secreting specific saliva while feeding, the aphids force the leaf to grow abnormally, creating a hollow gall. This process diverts the plant's resources and disrupts the normal physiological function of the leaf.

When it appears
The activity of the elm gall aphid begins in early spring, synchronized with the bud burst of the elm tree. The overwintering eggs hatch, and the stem mothers begin to form the first galls.
During late spring and early summer, the gall development reaches its peak. At this stage, the galls are fully expanded, and the aphid colonies inside are at their maximum density.
Mid-summer is typically marked by the migration of winged aphids to secondary host plants, leaving the galls on the elm trees either empty or sparsely populated by late-season residents.
As autumn approaches, the aphids return to the elm trees to mate and lay eggs. These eggs are the life stage that survives the winter, tucked into the bark crevices until the following spring.
For monitoring purposes, it is essential to inspect trees from late May to early July, as this is when the characteristic symptoms are most visible and diagnostic.
Signs of infestation
The most reliable sign of an elm gall aphid infestation is the presence of spindle-shaped or elongated galls on the upper surface of the elm leaves.

- Visible sticky honeydew residue on the leaves or branches below the canopy.

Even without seeing the galls, the presence of ants foraging on the tree is a strong indication that sucking insects, such as aphids, are active in the upper canopy.
Control measures
Mechanical removal of infested leaves is an effective management tactic for small trees. By pruning and disposing of the galls early in the season, you can prevent the aphids from completing their lifecycle.
Systemic insecticides can be applied as a preventive measure during the early spring, targeting the vulnerable stage when aphids emerge from their winter dormancy to colonize new buds.
Conservation of natural predators, such as lady beetles, lacewings, and hoverflies, is highly recommended to keep aphid populations below the economic threshold without using chemicals.
Maintaining tree health through proper irrigation and fertilization ensures that elms have the energy reserves required to tolerate minor infestations without long-term damage.
Dormant oil applications on the tree bark during late winter can help eliminate the egg stage, significantly reducing the potential population size for the upcoming growing season.
