Biology and life cycle: These insects are primarily nocturnal and spend almost their entire life cycle underground. They thrive in damp, loose soil where they construct elaborate tunnel networks. The life cycle involves incomplete metamorphosis, with nymphs appearing as smaller versions of adults, which allows them to feed on roots from an early developmental stage.

Affected crops and damage type: Jerusalem crickets are opportunistic feeders that target underground plant structures. They are known to feed on potato tubers, vegetable roots, and the bulbs of flowering plants. By chewing through roots and stems below the soil surface, they disrupt the plant's ability to absorb water and nutrients, eventually leading to plant collapse.

Damage assessment: Assessing damage can be difficult because the insects remain out of sight.
