They have a slow reproductive cycle, but their habit of maintaining permanent burrow systems means that once they establish a territory on a farm, they are difficult to displace. Their digging activity is relentless, as they maintain complex networks of tunnels that can be several meters deep and extensive in length.

The primary agricultural harm caused by wombats is the destruction of soil integrity and infrastructure. The tunnels often undermine farm roads, irrigation channels, and fencing. Moreover, farm machinery frequently suffers structural damage after driving over burrow openings or areas where the ground has subsided due to subsurface tunnels, posing a significant safety risk to operators.

The installation of heavy-duty wire netting, buried at least half a meter deep, is the industry standard for protecting high-value agricultural zones. In addition to physical barriers, proactive field maintenance, such as regular scouting and filling of burrow entrances, is essential to prevent the expansion of their territory into active cultivation zones.
