These pests primarily target seedlings, soft plant tissues, and root vegetables. Strawberries, cucumbers, and young vegetable transplants are especially vulnerable, as are various greenhouse ornamentals. When food resources are limited, they readily feed on tender roots and emerging shoots, causing severe damage to early-stage crops.

The biology of woodlice is strictly dependent on moisture. They are nocturnal creatures, spending daylight hours under mulch, stones, or within the upper layers of damp soil. The females carry their offspring in a marsupium or brood pouch until they are ready to emerge. This life cycle allows them to thrive in protected, humid environments like greenhouses.

Damage caused by woodlice is often characterized by irregular holes in leaves and gnawed stems. In severe infestations, they can destroy entire germination rows. Beyond the direct physical damage, woodlice can act as vectors for various plant pathogens, as their presence in decaying matter often correlates with the spread of fungal diseases to living plants.

Management strategies focus on modifying the habitat to make it less suitable for these crustaceans. Prevention is significantly more effective than curative chemical control. Key measures include:

  • Reducing soil moisture through better drainage and ventilation.
  • Removing debris, old boards, and weed piles that provide shelter.
  • Maintaining a clean greenhouse environment to limit breeding sites.
  • Using barriers or biological controls if the population density reaches economic threshold.
