The biology of sponges is defined by their filter-feeding behavior. Their life cycle involves a free-swimming larval stage that eventually settles on a substrate, such as plant roots or pipe walls. Once attached, they expand rapidly, thriving in nutrient-rich water environments typical of intensive plant cultivation.
