The family Raphidiidae, commonly known as snakeflies, belongs to the order Raphidioptera. Despite their somewhat menacing appearance caused by their elongated prothorax and head, they are not agricultural pests. Instead, they are recognized as highly beneficial predators that inhabit forests and orchards.

Adult snakeflies and their larvae act as natural pest controllers. They primarily feed on various small invertebrates such as aphids, spider mites, leafhoppers, and small lepidopteran larvae. By preying on these organisms, snakeflies play a crucial role in maintaining the ecological balance within fruit tree canopies.
The life cycle of Raphidiidae usually spans one to two years. Females use their long ovipositors to lay eggs into crevices of tree bark. Larvae are typically found under bark or in fissures of the wood, where they actively search for prey. Their development through several larval stages ensures a constant presence of predators throughout the growing season.
It is a common misconception to label snakeflies as threats to crops. They do not damage plant tissues, consume foliage, or suck sap. Their interaction with plants is purely incidental, as they use trees primarily as hunting grounds to secure food sources. Therefore, they pose zero risk to the health or yield of agricultural crops.
No control measures against snakeflies are necessary as they are valuable allies in integrated pest management (IPM). Growers are encouraged to avoid the broad-spectrum use of insecticides, which can harm these helpful predators. Promoting a diverse garden environment will help sustain snakefly populations, ultimately reducing the reliance on synthetic chemicals.
