These insects are well-known in the agricultural community for their unique "looper" larvae, which move by arching their bodies, distinguishing them from other lepidopteran larvae during field inspections.

Host plants. This pest is a polyphage, meaning it affects a wide range of host plants. It primarily targets fruit trees such as apples, pears, and cherries, but it can also infest various ornamental shrubs and deciduous trees, making it a significant concern for both commercial orchards and home gardens.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle involves complete metamorphosis, consisting of egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages. They typically overwinter as pupae within the soil or in bark crevices. Once temperatures rise in spring, the adults emerge to mate and lay eggs on the host plant, beginning a new generation of foliage-consuming larvae.

Damage and economic impact. The larvae feed aggressively on leaves, resulting in skeletonization or complete defoliation of the tree. This damage stresses the host plant, severely impacting photosynthesis, reducing fruit size, and decreasing the overall health and winter hardiness of the orchard.

Control measures. Effective management requires an integrated approach:

  • Autumn cultivation and tilling of the soil around trees to expose and kill overwintering pupae.
  • Application of sticky bands to tree trunks to physically prevent larvae from reaching the canopy.
  • Use of biological pesticides, such as Bt-based products, during the early larval stages.
  • Targeted application of insecticides if the population density exceeds the economic injury level.
