These crabs damage agricultural crops by physically severing the stems and roots of young plants. In rice farming regions, they are known to cause widespread destruction of seedlings in flooded fields. In addition to plant damage, they act as predators in aquaculture settings, aggressively feeding on the larvae of shrimps and mollusks, thereby threatening the viability of commercial shellfish farms.

The biology of Portunidae involves complex larval stages that drift with water currents. Adult crabs are equipped with paddle-like hind legs, allowing them to swim effectively and migrate from marine environments into irrigation canals. Their high reproductive rate and opportunistic feeding behavior make them highly resilient pests that can quickly colonize new flooded areas.

The damage caused by these crabs is characterized by clean, mechanical cuts to plant stems, often occurring overnight. Because they are highly active and gregarious, a small group of crabs can destroy a large portion of a crop field in a very short period. The extent of damage is generally higher in areas with slow-moving water and abundant shelter.

Effective control measures focus on physical exclusion and habitat management. Key strategies include:

  • Installing fine-mesh screens on irrigation inlets to block crab entry.
  • Maintaining proper water circulation to discourage nesting.
  • Using crab-safe deterrents or biological control agents in managed waters.
  • Regular inspection and manual removal from high-density areas.
  • Monitoring the salinity levels in irrigation water can also assist in pest management, as many Portunidae species have specific tolerance thresholds. Integrated pest management (IPM) practices, including chemical-free exclusion methods, are the preferred approach for sustainable coastal farming.
