In terms of systematic classification, these insects are aquatic invertebrates. The larval stage, known as the naiad, spends its life burrowing into the sediment of rivers, lakes, and, notably, irrigation canals. They are adapted to soft, muddy substrates where they feed on organic detritus, playing an important role in the decomposition process of aquatic environments.

They do not damage plant foliage or roots, meaning they are not considered direct crop pests. However, their burrowing activity can be detrimental to the infrastructure of irrigation networks. By creating extensive tunnel systems in the banks of earthen canals, high densities of larvae may lead to increased siltation and potential structural weakness in canal embankments.

The lifecycle is characterized by a long aquatic larval phase followed by a very short adult stage. The adult mayflies emerge synchronously in large swarms. This mass emergence can disrupt field operations, contaminate farm machinery filters, and create logistical challenges for agricultural workers during peak seasonal activities.

Protection strategies are strictly preventive and structural rather than chemical. To minimize interactions with these insects:

  • Maintain the integrity of irrigation canal banks.
  • Regularly dredge and remove excess sediment from water channels.
  • Implement proper water management to prevent stagnant conditions that favor mass larvae colonization.
