The family Phalangeridae belongs to the order Diprotodontia. These marsupials, primarily found in Australia, New Guinea, and surrounding islands, lead a predominantly arboreal lifestyle. In an agronomic context, certain representatives of this family, particularly brush-tailed cuscuses, are considered significant pests of orchards and plantations.

The diet of these animals includes leaves, buds, flowers, and fruits of various plants. They cause substantial damage to fruit orchards by destroying harvests of apples, pears, and other fruits. Furthermore, cuscuses frequently damage young saplings by gnawing on bark and shoots, which leads to the weakening and eventual death of fruit-bearing trees.
The biology of Phalangeridae is characterized by their high adaptability to anthropogenic landscapes. Reproduction typically occurs seasonally, with females giving birth to one or two offspring that remain in the pouch for an extended period. High survival rates of the young and a lack of natural predators in cultivated landscapes contribute to rapid population growth near human settlements.
The damage patterns are manifested as torn leaf edges, eaten fruit ovaries, and teeth marks on the bark. Their pest activity results not only in the loss of harvest quality but also in the long-term suppression of woody plant development. In some regions, their presence restricts the viability of growing certain types of exotic crops.
Protection measures include the installation of mechanical barriers: metal collars on tree trunks that prevent the animals from climbing. The use of strong-smelling repellents and ultrasonic deterrents is also effective. In a number of countries, population management is carried out through licensed trapping and relocation of individuals to their natural habitats.
