Biology and life cycle: Bandicoots are primarily nocturnal and solitary creatures. Their reproductive biology is characterized by a very short gestation period, allowing for rapid population growth when resources are abundant. They are highly adaptable to various environments, which complicates control efforts in agricultural landscapes.
Nature of damage and pest status: The primary form of damage is the excavation of soil. While searching for invertebrates and tubers, bandicoots leave characteristic conical holes and disturbed soil patterns. This activity damages the root systems of crops, exposes tubers to rot, and compromises the integrity of garden beds and lawns.
Control measures: Effective management involves exclusion techniques, such as installing wire mesh fencing buried at least 20 cm underground to prevent burrowing. Removing debris, tall weeds, and overgrown vegetation around fields helps reduce their habitat. Ultrasonic devices may provide short-term deterrence, but physical exclusion remains the most reliable solution.
