These pests infest a vast range of host plants, including fruit trees such as apple, pear, and plum, as well as various ornamental shrubs and foliage plants. Their ability to remain stationary for most of their life cycle makes them difficult to spot until the population has reached significant, damaging levels.
The life cycle of soft scales typically involves a single generation per year, with nymphs (crawlers) often overwintering in bark crevices. Once temperatures rise in spring, they feed actively on plant sap. After reaching maturity, females produce a large number of eggs beneath their bodies, which allows for rapid infestation of new plant parts.
The damage caused by soft scales is twofold: they remove essential plant nutrients and water, which causes yellowing, stunted growth, and premature leaf drop. Furthermore, they secrete honeydew, a sugary substance that promotes the growth of sooty mold, which impairs the plant's ability to photosynthesize and reduces the aesthetic and commercial value of the crop.
Management strategies focus on a combination of cultural and chemical controls. Effective measures include:
- Pruning and removing heavily infested branches.
- Applying dormant oil sprays to smother overwintering nymphs.
- Using systemic insecticides timed with the crawler emergence stage.
- Encouraging natural predators such as lady beetles and parasitic wasps.
Regular monitoring of plants, particularly along veins and stems, is crucial for timely intervention before the pest becomes established and difficult to eradicate.
