Systematic position: Gnathiids (Gnathiidae) are a family of isopod crustaceans belonging to the order Isopoda. While primarily known as marine ectoparasites of fish, their presence in aquaponic agricultural systems can have detrimental effects on the overall biological health of the ecosystem, which directly supports vegetable crop production.

Crops and damage: Gnathiids are not primary pests of terrestrial plants; however, in aquaponics, they function as secondary pests. By infecting the fish stocks that serve as the nutrient source for plants, they indirectly cause significant losses in crop yield and quality, as the entire symbiotic balance of the agricultural setup is compromised.
Biology and lifecycle: The lifecycle of gnathiids is complex and includes a parasitic larval stage known as a praniza. The larvae attach to the host, engorge themselves on body fluids, and then drop off to settle in the substrate to undergo molting and maturation. This dual-phase lifecycle makes them difficult to eradicate as they hide in sediments and filtration zones.
Character of damage: Damage to plants is indirect but severe. When fish are infested by gnathiids, they exhibit lethargy and stress, leading to a decrease in their feeding activity.
