Fredericellidae is a family of freshwater colonial organisms belonging to the phylum Bryozoa. While typically found in natural water bodies, these organisms have emerged as a significant nuisance in hydroponics, aquaponics, and controlled-environment agricultural water systems, where they cause severe biofouling of irrigation infrastructure.

Taxonomically, they are classified under the class Phylactolaemata and the order Plumatellida. The organisms form branching, tube-like colonies that adhere firmly to substrates such as PVC piping, pump impellers, and tank walls. Their physical structure, reinforced by protective tubes, makes them highly resistant to common mechanical cleaning methods.
Their life cycle revolves around filter feeding, capturing organic particles suspended in the nutrient solution. They reproduce both sexually and through the production of statoblasts — durable, dormant resting stages. These statoblasts allow the colony to survive adverse conditions, including chemical shocks, complete system drainage, and periods of desiccation.
The primary damage caused by Fredericellidae is the physical occlusion of plumbing lines, irrigation emitters, and nozzles, which results in water flow restriction and irregular nutrient delivery to crops. Furthermore, large colonies can compete for dissolved oxygen in the nutrient solution and promote the growth of anaerobic bacteria upon localized death, leading to root rot and systemic plant stress.
Effective control requires a multi-layered approach centered on prevention and system hygiene. Producers should implement high-capacity filtration systems to remove organic particulates and utilize ultraviolet (UV) sterilization units to neutralize free-floating larvae. If colonies are established, systems must be cleaned using oxidizing agents, such as hydrogen peroxide solutions, followed by rigorous mechanical flushing to remove organic debris.
