Rice crops are the primary target for Cyzicidae. The infestation typically occurs during the early growth stages, specifically from the germination phase until the plants are well-established. These organisms thrive in the flooded environment of rice paddies, where they exploit the presence of young, nutrient-rich plant tissues.

The biology of Cyzicidae is uniquely adapted to intermittent water bodies. Their eggs are capable of surviving prolonged periods of desiccation, remaining dormant in the soil for years. Once the field is flooded, these eggs hatch rapidly, leading to explosive population growth that coincides perfectly with the rice sowing or emergence timing.

The damage caused by these pests involves the physical destruction of seedlings. Cyzicidae graze on the soft tissues of young rice roots and shoots, often consuming them entirely.
