These pests primarily target the root systems of plants grown in aquatic or water-logged environments. By consuming the delicate root hairs and epidermal tissues of the stem base, cirolanids disrupt the plant's ability to absorb nutrients and water. The biology of cirolanids is characterized by high adaptability and an opportunistic feeding behavior. They possess sharp, robust mandibles capable of tearing through plant tissue. Their life cycle is rapid in nutrient-rich water, and they often exhibit nocturnal activity, hiding in substrate or filtration components during the daylight hours, which makes early detection challenging.

Damage caused by cirolanids is often mistaken for root rot due to the plant's wilting symptoms. Closer inspection reveals frayed or missing root tips, indicating mechanical grazing. These wounds serve as entry points for secondary bacterial and fungal pathogens, which often accelerate plant decline and result in yield reduction or total loss of the crop.
