Stoneflies (Capniidae)
The family Capniidae belongs to the order Plecoptera, commonly known as stoneflies. These insects are primarily aquatic in their nymphal stage and are frequently found near freshwater streams and rivers. While they are often observed in agricultural landscapes near water sources, they are not recognized as significant agricultural pests.

The biological cycle of these insects is tied to aquatic ecosystems. Eggs are deposited in water, and the nymphs undergo several molts while feeding on detritus, algae, or decaying organic matter. Once the nymphs reach maturity, they emerge as winged adults, whose primary function is mating and dispersal rather than feeding on agricultural foliage.
In terms of plant damage, Capniidae do not feed on crops. Farmers may occasionally see large numbers of these insects on garden plants or nearby vegetation, leading to a misconception of them being pests. However, there is no evidence of them causing structural or physiological damage to plants that would impact harvest yields.
No protection measures are necessary for stoneflies. Because they do not harm crops, there is no economic or agronomic justification for using insecticides. Chemical control in areas near their breeding grounds can have severe unintended consequences for the local biodiversity and aquatic health.
Instead of control, land managers should view their presence as an indicator of a healthy, functioning ecosystem. Their role as prey for birds and other beneficial predatory insects makes them a part of the natural biological control network, and they should be left undisturbed within the agricultural landscape.
