Their biological cycle is characterized by an aquatic lifestyle involving extensive burrowing for protection and reproduction. Females carry eggs attached to their pleopods, ensuring high offspring survival rates. This reproductive efficiency allows populations to rapidly colonize irrigation ditches and adjacent agricultural land.

The damage caused by crayfish is primarily physical: their burrowing activities create conduits through earthen dams and levees, leading to significant water leakage and soil erosion. These tunnels destabilize the infrastructure, potentially resulting in catastrophic field drainage and uneven water levels across crops.

Integrated pest management strategies include reinforcing irrigation banks with stone, concrete, or geosynthetics to prevent burrowing. Mechanical harvesting and trapping are standard control methods used to reduce population density. Maintaining water velocity and managing bank vegetation can also discourage crayfish from establishing permanent burrows.
