The life cycle of owlflies consists of egg, three larval stages, pupa, and adult. Eggs are usually laid in clusters on vegetation or solid substrates. Larvae are voracious predators that do not build webs but wait for prey on the ground or on foliage, utilizing their sickle-shaped mandibles to seize victims like aphids and other small arthropods.

In the context of agricultural impact, owlflies are generally considered beneficial. However, in specific nursery or greenhouse settings, high densities of larvae may incidentally damage tender plant tissues while foraging or creating pupation sites. This makes them occasional subjects of interest for agronomists assessing plant damage.

The damage caused by these insects is usually minimal and mechanical. It occurs during larval activity, potentially leaving small wounds on stems or leaves. Farmers should evaluate whether the pest control benefits (predation on aphids, mites, etc.) provided by these insects outweigh the minor mechanical damage they might inflict on crops.
