Systematic position. The Aristeidae family belongs to the order Decapoda, consisting primarily of deep-sea shrimp. In agricultural entomology, these are not classified as conventional plant pests. Their presence in agricultural settings is typically associated with technical systems like aquaponics, where marine-derived organic matter might be utilized as a nutrient source, potentially influencing the cultivation environment.

Aristeidae

Crops and specificity. Aristeidae are marine organisms and do not inhabit terrestrial agricultural environments. Direct damage to crops by these organisms is biologically impossible under standard conditions. Issues might only arise if untreated marine-origin substrates are introduced into controlled irrigation systems, leading to secondary water quality issues or imbalances in the plant nutrient profile.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle of Aristeidae is exclusively marine, involving larval stages such as zoea and megalopa. These crustaceans require high-salinity water to survive and complete their development. Consequently, they cannot establish populations in soil-based farming or standard freshwater hydroponic systems, as they are physiologically incompatible with these environments.

Character of damage and harmfulness. There is no evidence of Aristeidae causing direct physical damage to plant tissues, such as root pruning or leaf consumption. The "harmfulness" is strictly restricted to indirect factors, primarily involving the contamination of irrigation lines with non-decomposed organic matter, which could provide a substrate for secondary fungal or bacterial pathogens affecting plant health.

Protection measures. Management focuses on rigorous quality control of inputs. Agronomists must ensure that any marine-derived fertilizers or amendments are fully processed, sterilized, and free from live biological inclusions. Maintaining sterile conditions in hydroponic reservoirs and using appropriate filtration systems is sufficient to prevent any potential risks associated with the usage of such organic products.
