These small insects are typically found in moist environments, particularly on the surface of standing or slow-moving water, as well as on wet shorelines. These insects are primarily associated with habitats rich in aquatic vegetation. In agricultural contexts, they are occasionally observed in rice paddies and irrigated vegetable crops. Because they are adapted to both aquatic and semi-aquatic life, their movement between water sources and crop areas can lead to unexpected localized infestations.

The biology of Mesovelidae involves incomplete metamorphosis, progressing through egg, five nymphal stages, and adult stages. Females lay their eggs directly into the tissues of aquatic plants. The nymphs feed similarly to adults, often utilizing their piercing-sucking mouthparts to derive nutrients from both animal matter and plant sap, which is the root cause of their potential pest status.

The damage caused by these insects is characterized by the puncturing of tender plant shoots. When populations are dense, the feeding activity leads to necrosis, stunted growth, and susceptibility to secondary infections. While they are usually predatory, their opportunistic switch to plant feeding during high-density events can significantly affect the vigor of young seedlings.

Management strategies focus on habitat modification. Keeping irrigation channels clear of debris and excessive floating vegetation is the most effective way to limit their nesting sites. Additionally, monitoring water quality and maintaining optimal irrigation cycles can disrupt their development. If populations exceed economic thresholds, the application of targeted insecticides or biological control agents may be required to protect crop yield.
