Taxonomically, the family Chabertiidae is classified under the phylum Nematoda and the class Chromadorea. These nematodes are distinguished by a large, bell-shaped buccal capsule equipped with specialized structures for attachment to the host's intestinal wall. Adult worms are relatively robust, typically measuring between 10 and 20 millimeters in length, and thrive by consuming the blood and mucosal tissue of their host.

The life cycle of Chabertiidae is direct, meaning it does not require an intermediate host. After eggs are excreted in the feces, they develop into infective larvae in the environment. This process is highly dependent on ambient temperature and moisture levels. Once the larvae reach the infective stage, they migrate onto vegetation, where they are ingested by grazing livestock, completing the cycle and starting a new infection in the intestinal lumen.

The pathogenicity of Chabertiidae is largely attributed to the trauma caused by the adult worms' attachment to the colon wall. This leads to inflammatory responses, localized hemorrhaging, and mucosal erosions. Infected animals typically exhibit symptoms such as diarrhea, reduced weight gain, lethargy, and anemia. Left untreated, high parasite loads can lead to chronic emaciation and significant economic losses for farmers due to decreased productivity.

Effective management and control strategies involve a combination of chemical and management interventions. Regular deworming protocols using anthelmintic agents remain the primary defense. Furthermore, pasture management plays a crucial role; rotating grazing areas and avoiding overcrowding helps to reduce the density of infective larvae on the pasture. Ensuring proper nutrition further bolsters the host's immune system, helping animals better withstand the impact of parasitic infections.
