The primary hosts for these parasites are members of the Anguilla genus, including the European eel and the Japanese eel. By inhabiting the swim bladder, the parasites disrupt the fish's hydrostatic regulation, which is essential for buoyancy control and long-distance migration, ultimately compromising the overall health of the stock.

The life cycle is complex and involves intermediate hosts, typically small crustaceans like copepods. Eels become infected by ingesting these intermediate hosts or paratenic hosts (such as smaller fish). Once ingested, the larvae penetrate the swim bladder wall, where they mature into adults and begin reproducing, completing the cycle.

The damage caused by Anguillicolidae includes severe inflammation, thickening, and fibrosis of the swim bladder wall. This pathological condition hinders the eel's ability to maintain equilibrium, leads to reduced growth rates, increased susceptibility to secondary infections, and, in severe cases, significant mortality among farmed populations.
